Gabrielle Haywood recently sat down with award-winning radio personality Ki Ki B. Jones of WAMO 107.3 and KDKA Radio on her show "What’s Good In The Hood" to discuss her powerful stage production, The Journey.
Haywood is bringing a long-held vision to life with this original production, premiering in Pittsburgh. First conceived over 25 years ago in Atlanta, the play draws inspiration from her childhood love of The Wizard of Oz, reimagined through a deeply spiritual lens. At the heart of the story is Dorita, a young woman on a quest to discover her true purpose—one that ultimately leads her not to a wizard, but to an encounter with God.
The production creatively updates familiar characters for a modern audience. Dorita’s companions include Scar, a drug dealer who believes he lacks intelligence; Mr. Manning, a wealthy but heartless billionaire; and Pastor Lions, a preacher struggling with the courage to speak truth. Even the whimsical elements are reimagined, with “Munches”—a group of neighborhood rappers embodying the fruits of the spirit—adding cultural relevance and energy to the story.
Set to run from May 29 through May 31 at the Charity Randall Theater in Oakland, The Journey marks its 25th anniversary with a large-scale production that often surprises audiences. What many expect to be a modest church play transforms into a Broadway-caliber experience, featuring a cast of over 20 performers, including dancers and singers. Standout performances include Nicole as “Goodness,” Mike as “Christ,” Lenise Rouse as “Big Mom,” and a young breakout talent, nine-year-old Riley as “Much Power.”
While the show delivers high-quality entertainment, Haywood emphasizes that its true purpose is ministry. The production aims to inspire, uplift, and create lasting impact. A particularly moving moment comes through a tribute to the late Elder Lisa, whose original song is performed during the show, honoring her legacy and deep connection to the local church community.
